On Sunday 18th May, in celebration of International Museum Day, Heritage Malta is offering free admission to selected sites across the islands during normal opening hours. Delve into Malta’s rich history and culture at the following locations:

  • South Region: Għar Dalam

Għar Dalam, located in Birżebbuġa, is Malta’s oldest prehistoric site. The cave has yielded animal bones dating back to the Pleistocene epoch, including those of dwarf elephants and hippopotami. It was also utilised by some of the earliest farmers on the islands more than 7,000 years ago, leaving behind traces of domestic animals, pottery and tools. The on-site museum showcases these findings in a preserved Victorian-style display.

  • Valletta Region: The National Museum of Archaeology

Located in the Auberge de Provence on Republic Street in Valletta, the National Museum of Archaeology offers a fascinating journey through the Maltese Islands’ prehistory and early history. With artefacts dating from Malta’s Neolithic period (5900–2500 BC) to the early Phoenician period (8th–6th century BC), the museum is the perfect place to discover the rich history of the land, its people, and their ancestors.

  • Rabat, Mdina & North Region: The National Museum of Natural History

Housed in an 18th-century palace within the fortified city of Mdina, this museum offers extensive exhibits on various aspects of natural history, including geology, paleontology, zoology, and botany. The collections feature specimens such as minerals, fossils, shells, insects, birds, and mammals, providing a comprehensive overview of the natural world.

  • Gozo Region: All Ċittadella sites

The Ċittadella in Victoria, Gozo, is a historical fortified city that hosts several notable sites including the Gozo Museum of Archaeology, showcasing artefacts from Gozo’s prehistoric periods through the medieval era, the Gran Castello Historic House offering insights into the daily life of 18th and 19th-century inhabitants of Gozo’s castle, the Gozo Nature Museum focusing on the island’s natural environment and biodiversity, and the Old Prison featuring well-preserved cells and historical graffiti left by inmates.

  • Central Region: Birchircara Railway Museum

This museum offers a glimpse into Malta’s railway history, featuring models of locomotives and rolling stock from the Malta Railway, which operated between 1883 and 1931. Exhibits also include related artefacts and illustrations of the social context of the railway era.

  • Three Cities & Harbour Region: Malta Maritime Museum

Located along the Birgu waterfront in the historical Naval Bakery, the Malta Maritime Museum is currently hosting An Island at the Crossroads, an exhibition exploring Malta’s strategic role in Mediterranean seafaring while also highlighting the cultural and environmental impacts of maritime activity on the island over time.

Mark your calendar for this special day to explore these sites and uncover the stories that have shaped the Maltese Islands – all free of charge.

On Sunday, 1st June, we invite you to join the party tune!

Celebrate this important milestone with us as the National War Museum turns 50. Instead of a sweet, fluffy cake, we have concocted a full day’s programme of events and activities at the Fort, open for free, that will delight all audiences.

Hourly guided tours of the museum, alternately in Maltese and English, will start at 10:00 in Maltese and conclude with the last tour at 17:00 in English. These are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

The George Cross medal, a highlight of the museum’s collection, will be reunited with the original letter from King George VI, kindly loaned for this special occasion by the National Library of Malta.

Historical re-enactments by the Malta Command World War II Living History Group and the Historical Re-enactment Group of Malta will bring history to life throughout the day. These will be complemented by a variety of activities curated by Heritage Malta’s Underwater Cultural Heritage Unit (UCHU), Diagnostic Science Laboratories (DSL), and the agency’s Education Department.

A new immersive experience, focusing on the pivotal role of the Bofors Light Anti-Aircraft gun, will also be inaugurated during the event. Weather permitting, a Piper J-3 Cub aircraft will perform a flyover of Fort St Elmo – a thrilling highlight not to be missed.

Admission is completely free.

On Tuesday 10th June, Heritage Malta cordially invites you to an evening guided tour of Fort St Elmo, marking the 85th anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War in Malta.

Fort St Elmo played a pivotal role during what became known as Malta’s second Great Siege. Serving as the Regimental Headquarters of the Royal Malta Artillery, it also bore the brunt of the first air raid on the island, recording Malta’s first military casualties of the conflict.

Until 1943, the fort continued to guard the entrance to Malta’s Grand Harbour, a prime strategic target throughout the war. Most notably, on 26th July 1941, Fort St Elmo was instrumental in repelling the only seaborne assault against the Maltese Islands.

This and many other wartime episodes will be brought to life during this compelling historical tour, offering unique insights into Malta’s wartime resilience and strategic importance.

The tour will start at 19:00. Tickets cost €12 for adults, €10 for seniors and students, and €8 for Heritage Malta members. Book your spot now at Store – Heritage Malta or at any Heritage Malta museum or site.

An exhibition about a Phoenician shipwreck located off Xlendi, Gozo, is open at the National Museum of Archaeology, enabling visitors to experience the work behind the first-ever excavation by scientific divers beyond 100 metres.

First discovered in 2007, the wreck site of a 7th century BC Phoenician trading vessel is located at a depth of 110 metres. The depth of the site has ensured its well-preserved condition but has also made it extremely challenging to investigate.

The decision to conduct an excavation at a depth of 110 metres was made in 2018. Two years later, a significant number of objects were recovered from the wreck, including complete amphorae, ceramic fragments, smaller whole jugs and urns, some of which are rare and unique in the Maltese archaeological record. A particularly exciting discovery was that of a mortise and tenon joint, an ancient shipbuilding technique used to assemble ships’ hulls.

2021 saw the last season of excavation on the Phoenician Shipwreck Project. A rare and thrilling discovery was that of a human tooth – the first human remains to be discovered on the site. This lower, right, first molar was sent for further tests, including carbon dating and DNA analysis.

The exhibition, previously held at the Citadel in Gozo and at the National Aquarium, focuses on the innovative techniques used to scientifically excavate a deep-water site, while showcasing artefacts recovered from the wreck. Audio-visual presentations help transport visitors to the seabed outside Xlendi Bay.

Visit the Virtual Underwater Museum to learn more.

Admission to the exhibition is included in the normal ticket prices for the National Museum of Archaeology. Updates about opening hours can be found here Opening Hours – Heritage Malta.
